HALIFAX - A Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge has thrown out an application that sought the cancellation of a municipal tax deal for the idled NewPage Port Hawkesbury paper mill.

Judge John Murphy ruled against the mill's prospective owner Pacific West Commercial Corp. during a hearing today in Halifax.

Pacific West Commercial wanted the court to terminate the agreement made between Richmond County and the mill's former owner Stora Enso.

The deal fixed municipal tax rates paid by the mill for a 10-year period.

The company argued that it should only have to pay about one-sixth of its current tax bill of $2.5 million.

Richmond County says if the agreement were nixed, it would have resulted in a possible 26.5 per cent residential tax hike and deferred maintenance of buildings and equipment.
